DOWER   BARN

This C18 barn had stood empty for many years with its thatch replaced by corrugated iron, but the floor and roof timbers were all in remarkably good condition.

In converting it to a dwelling we opted to place the main living areas on the upper floor to keep the whole space open with the restored roof structure all visible. Bedrooms and bathrooms were placed on the lower floor and retain the old beams, joists and boarding above as the ceiling whilst a new structural floor was constructed above this with an oak boarded finish.

A large new opening was made at the Southern end and all of the windows and doors were constructed in oak with plain galvanised steel opening lights, combining agricultural materials from different eras.

The thatch roof was reinstated, with the addition of a fire barrier and insulation as well as new roof trusses concealed in the construction.

Natural materials such as unfinished sawn oak boarding, earth plasters and lime render were used in conjunction with more contemporary glass and stainless steel fittings
